The scenery on the way is dramatic and colourful with bird life, wet lands and high escarpments. A visit to the Bowali Visitor Centre Park Headquarters is a must.

It’s worth taking a guided tour to have the history of the rock art explained to you.

Katherine Gorge is a system of 13 gorges all joining by rapids and is located 30 kilometres from the town centre; here the river flows between towering walls of colour. The best way to see the Gorge is from the water, there are also scenic flights (own expense) and plenty of marked walking tracks.

DAY 05: Katherine to Tennant Creek (673 km)
Get an early start for the long drive today. Continue south on the Stuart Highway to Tennant Creek. Travel through Daly Waters and Newcastle Waters on this journey. Tennant Creek has an interesting founding story. Legend has it that the town was formed when a beer wagon broke down and the drivers stayed to drink the cargo.
