Kununurra

Kununurra is a pleasant modern town established in 1960 as the centre of the huge Ord River Dam and Irrigation project.  Now the major town of the East Kimberly region, Kununurra is a part of the state in which rugged pioneer families took up huge land holdings and established themselves as “Kings In Grass Castles” , well documented in books by Dame Mary Durack.

Kununurra is an ideal base from which to tour and to visit the many attractions of the region: include a visit to the Argyle Diamond Mine, Cruise on Lake Argyle a huge inland sea and fly by fixed wing to The Bungle Bungles. The town is also the departure point for fly-in destinations on the remote Northern coast, places like Hideaway Bay and the Mitchell Falls to name just a few.

There are direct air services to Kununurra from Perth, Darwin, and Broome and the town is included in many of our Kimberly rental car self drive suggestions.

Looking for a fabulous experience?  We recommend the Mitchell Falls Explorer – Plane/Heli/Walk Combo ex Kununurra.  Slingair offers an outstanding day out exploring the remote Mitchell Plateau flying over El Questro & Drysdale River National Park before landing at the Mitchell Plateau Airstrip.  Connect with a helicopter for a flight over the spectacular Mitchell Falls before you land there are are dropped off.  At the Falls, you will spend almost two hours on the ground on your own where you can take a self-guided walk, swim and enjoy a pre-packed morning tea.  You will have plenty of time to photograph the spectacular surroundings, before being picked up by a helicopter and returned to the Mitchell Plateau airstrip.  Re-board the aeroplane for views of Port Warrender, Kalumburu, King George Falls, Berkeley River Gorge, Cambridge Gulf and Adolphus Island before landing in Kununurra.  Duration 7 – 8 hours, operates May to September.  Ask us about pick and/or drop off options for El Questro Wilderness Resort.
