Newman
The important town of Newman is situated 1,186 km north of Perth on the Great Northern Highway. The town takes its name from Mount Newman, an 1,100 metre high peak nearby.
In 1957 a massive iron ore deposit was discovered and is today the site of the worlds largest open cut iron ore mine where some of the most advanced material handling techniques are used to load giant 240 car ore trains pulled by four locomotives which haul the giant load 426 km to the ship loading facilities at Port Hedland.
Tours of the mining operations operate Monday to Friday from the Newman tourist Bureau.
