DAY 01: Cairns to Townsville (347 km)

Today your journey takes you south from the heart of the tropics. Skirt the Wooroonooran National Park near Babinda. At Innisfail you can detour onto the Old Bruce Highway, travelling through Mena Creek to visit the intriguing Paronella Park. Continue south to Cardwell and Ingham. Townsville is a modern, tropical city and the administrative capital of North Queensland. A visit to the Great Barrier Reef Wonderland is recommended; it houses the world’s largest living coral reef aquarium.

DAY 02: Townsville

A day at leisure to explore the region, why not venture over to Magnetic Island and experience the beauty of the beaches and discover what the National Park has to offer.

DAY 03: Townsville to Airlie Beach (275 km)

Continue south from Townsville along the Bruce Highway and pass through the twin towns of Ayr and Home Hill. Take a detour through Bowen, before arriving in Airlie Beach and Shute Harbour. Airlie Beach is one of Australia’s favourite holiday destinations and gateway to the seventy-two islands of the Whitsundays.

DAY 04: Airlie Beach

A day at leisure to enjoy what the beautiful Whitsunday’s has to offer. We suggest you take a sailing trip and spend the day on one of the many beautiful Whitsunday Islands. There are many operators offering different cruise and island combinations for you to choose from.

DAY 05: Airlie Beach to Rockhampton (482 km)

From Airlie Beach, travel back to Proserpine to join the highway and continue your journey south onto Mackay. Travel south towards Marlborough. Detour to Yeppoon, a seaside resort located on the coast overlooking Great Keppel Island. 40 kilometres south of Yeppoon is Rockhampton. There is a large spire at Curtis Park; this marks the exact line of the Tropic of Capricorn.

DAY 06: Rockhampton to Fraser Island (394 km)

Today, travel south on the Bruce Highway to Hervey Bay. Continue onto the River Heads village for departure to Fraser Island, the world’s largest Sand Island, 123 kilometres long and a haven for nature lovers. Check into the mainland terminal, unload luggage and then park your car (choice of car parking available – own expense). Board the Kingfisher Bay Ferry for the transfer across to Fraser Island. On arrival on Fraser Island, check-in and then the rest of the day is at leisure to start exploring the Island.

DAY 07: Fraser Island

Today we recommend taking a full day ranger guided Beauty Spots Tour of Fraser Island, including lunch (additional cost). On this tour you can learn about the natural and cultural history of the island, swim in clear freshwater lakes, walk through towering rainforest and drive along the amazing Seventy-Five Mile Beach. Other highlights include Lake McKenzie, Wanggoolba Creek, Eli Creek and

Maheno Shipwreck. This evening perhaps join an optional ranger guided activity, slideshow or go exploring on a spotlighting walk.

DAY 08: Fraser Island to Brisbane (300 km)

Depart Fraser Island and return to River Heads village by ferry. On arrival, collect your rental car and travel south on the Bruce Highway to Maryborough and pass through Gympie. Detour and head to the coast to Tewantin and Noosa on the coast. Explore the beautiful beaches of Noosa and Coolum. You can continue exploring the beaches south from Noosa to Caloundra, or head to Nambour and travel through the Sunshine Coast hinterland region and the towns of Montville and Maleny. Either way you choose, you will re-join the Bruce Highway to travel back on the Bruce Highway to Brisbane. Brisbane is the capital of Queensland and Australia’s third largest city.

Your vehicle is booked until tomorrow and needs to be returned to the city or airport, by the same time as it was picked up on Day 1 to avoid any additional charges.
