A small sample below of one of our highly detailed self-drive tour plans …

(Day and Date) – Kings Canyon to Glen Helen Resort (via Mereenie Loop 4WD access only – please allow 3.5 to 4 hours driving time)

Suggest an early start if you are doing the Kings Canyon walk this morning. Top up your fuel / refreshment supplies before leaving Kings Canyon and take the Mereenie Loop Drive. Travel via the Gardiner and MacDonnell Ranges and (Central Australia route map provided) to Glen Helen Gorge, located on Namatjira Drive. If time permits take the side trip up to Gosse Bluff for a stunning view and awesome landscape.

Important note: Firstly, there are conflicting reports on whether you need a permit or not … please ask about a permit, suggest you check with the staff at Kings Canyon Resort – you can purchase a permit from them – only valid for the day of purchase. The pass includes your transit permit, a colour brochure of the area and a map. The Mereenie Loop Road takes you through Aboriginal country, so you may need a permit and you are not allowed to do anything here. Don’t leave the road, don’t park and go walking, no picnicking, no camping, no nothing. The only place where you are allowed to pull up is the official “Jump-up” Lookout and rest area, not far north of the Watarrka National Park border.

This is an unsealed road and 4WD recommended. It can be harsh, very rough and corrugated unless graded recently. A reasonable level of driver skill is required, please take your time, do not speed! The road surface shifts from hard rocky surface to smooth sand, then corrugated sand or rocks with possible area of ‘bulldust’. Read about bulldust at end of itinerary.

He also happens to be a traditional Pitjantjatjara man from Australia’s central desert and speaks five languages. Frank Gamma is an extraordinary songwriter and an exceptional guitarist.
