Gibb River Road
Gibb River Road
The GRRR … as we fondly called it during our road trip in June 2008; was one of the best experiences we have had to date in Australia. My husband and I and two American friends spent over 12 days exploring the region and visiting the majority of station stays, safari camps and campgrounds. We walked, hiked, swam and experienced most of the cruise, scenic flight and hellicopter options.
The scenary is spectacular and ever changing but the lasting memory will be the people you’ll meet along the way. Kimberley folk that make you feel like you are getting to know the real Australia – no pretentions, really good people with good tales and a bit of history to tell. The accomodation is clean and comfortable but certainly no frills most of the time. When planning your trip, if time allows please budget on at least 5 to 6 nights on the road; the GRR is only some 700 kms in length but it should not be a race, plan for some real time to enjoy, relax and get to know the locals. Spend 1 or 2 whole days relaxing and swimming by a gorge not just ticking it off the list.
You do need to know what you are doing in this region – many things to be taken into consideration especially if you are travelling between mid June to early September – seriously you must think about booking 9 to 12 months in advance to give yourselves the best advantage regarding accomodaiton, vehicles and tour packages. Each year when we receive our new contract rates from car rental companies/motorhome/campers etc, we compare all the different terms and conditions, cans and can’t dos. We do the hard work for you regarding planning and making sure your trip is the best it can possibly be.
